James Bridges Sr. b. ca 1745 VA-?- d. ca 1792 York Dist. SC with probate record. Married Lydia Roberts Lashley (widow of Patrick Lashley and daughter of Richard Roberts) in 1760s in Granville Co. NC. Moved ca 1775/80 with apparent brother Thomas Bridges (m. Ann Lashley) to the "New Acquisition" in SC, (state border survey was in 1772) west of Camden Dist., south of old Tryon Co. NC to area which became York District in 1785. Children included: James Bridges Jr.; and one son either named Richard Roberts Bridges or Robert Richards Bridges; and possibly one Willis Bridges (named after Lydia's brother Willis Roberts); and several daughters. Lived about fifteen miles south of Shelby, NC and just south of Rutherford Co. (now Cleveland Co.) NC border with SC.
Their son, James Bridges Jr. b. Oct. 4, 1773 Granville Co. NC, d. July 11, 1816 York Dist., SC. Buried with an old but legible (in 1973) headstone at Buffalo Baptist Church in present Cherokee Co. SC reading: "Sacred to the memory of Capt. James Bridges who died July 11, 1816 aged 42 years, A man sedate of sober mind, to wife and children ever kind. Altho, great merit many have, Death summons all men to the grave". A footstone has "J. B.". He is buried near Col. Abram Irvine's footstone (d. Oct. 18, 1824, about 54); and he is buried in the fifth row from back of cemetery on the church side of the cemetery. The church is less than one mile south from the NC-SC state boundary, west of highway 18 which goes north to Shelby, NC. The exact birth date for James apparently comes from a Quin family Bible record kept in MS which did not record the death date. James Bridges married ca 1799 in SC to Nancy Quin b. The widow Nancy Quin Bridges may have had a very short second marriage ca 1818/1820 after her move to MS, apparently evidenced by a property document somewhat similar to a marriage contract. The house built in MS in 1832 by Nancy Quinn Bridges is still owned by family members.
